About Us

Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester County (LVGC) has served the area for twenty-five years.  We are a non-profit, volunteer organization with affiliations with Pro Literacy Worldwide, United Way and Gloucester County College.

We serve adults with free tutoring provided by persons who have completed training specifically geared to teaching adults who haven’t learned the conventional way.  These student-centered lessons have proven to be highly-effective with many motivated learners.  Our program addresses the needs of Basic Literacy students as well as English as a Second Language learners.

On average, we have approximately 70 volunteer tutors who give of themselves unselfishly, committing almost 100 hours a year helping their students.   They meet in public places like libraries, community centers, schools and even restaurants like Burger King to change someone’s life.

Throughout the year, LVGC hosts various fundraising events to help us with our literacy mission.  These events include Wine & Cheese, Scoop Up A Book, Read-a-thon, Annual Fund and Holiday mailing, and our corporate sponsorship, Stars of Literacy.  More than 40 percent of our contributed income comes from our tutors.  They really believe in us!
